Environment Art is Hard.

Especially as a beginner, like yourself. There are a ton of workflows out there, and it can be very confusing for a beginner who is just trying to get a handle on the basics.

That's why the Survival Kit was created.

This is an incredibly in-depth guide to environment art that was designed for beginners to help them get over the frustration of learning new workflows - and to show you the exact steps you need to take to start creating beautiful scenes in Unreal Engine, and other industry-standard software.

This course is different.

Blindly following instructions isn't a very effective way to learn.

The Environment Artist's Survival Kit was designed so that you aren't copying a scene another artist made. Each student will have time after each lesson to go off on their own and use what they learned to create their OWN art, unique to them.

Student Work:

Here is what you're going to learn:

Part 1: Creating Runtime Virtual Textures (RVTs)

In this section, Andre is going to show you how to properly set up your Project to utilize RVTs (Runtime Virtual Textures)

Enabling Runtime Virtual Textures in Unreal Engine allows you to have your foliage/environment sample the landscape beneath it to nicely blend and remove asset seams. It's really only a little bit of work to do it!

In the Survival Kit course, you're going to learn how to easily enable RVTs, and how to create your first textures so you can get up and running. This is an essential industry-standard practice that every new artist needs to learn.

Part 2: Creating Fluffy Trees

Who doesn't love making trees?

In Part 2, students are going to learn how to create beautiful, stylized & fluffy trees from scratch, using Blender & Unreal Engine.

Part 2.5: Asset Creation Bootcamp

Creating beautiful assets from scratch can be tricky. Luckily, the Survival Kit has your back.

In this extremely in-depth section, students are going to learn in meticulous detail how to create assets from scratch using Blender, ZBrush, Substance Painter & Unreal Engine.

This section will cover 3 main assets:

  • Simple Rocks
  • Landscape and Cliff terrain
  • Our hero asset

At the end of this section, you'll have all of the tools and knowledge you need to tackle asset creation in your future projects. From blocking out to modeling, sculpting, baking, and texturing, the Survival Kit covers it all.

Part 3: Introduction to Grass and Foliage

What scene would be complete without beautiful fluffy and stylized grass and foliage?

In this section, you're going to learn how to make beautiful grass complete with flowing wind vfx - to help breathe life into your foliage.

You're also going to learn how to make beautiful flowers from scratch, with endless variety and customizability.

Part 4: Intro to VFX

Subtle VFX are essential to any scene. In our Intro to VFX section of the course, you're going to learn how to create simple and beautiful wind wisp VFX to take your environment to the next level.

Part 5: Composition and Lighting

To close it all off, in our Lighting & Composition section, students will learn how Andre composes his scenes, and learn about his mindset when approaching essential topics like lighting and asset placement.
